A Third of Eligible Pensioners Not Claiming Vital Pension Credit

Published: 11 October 2024

In Cambridgeshire, an estimated one in three people eligible for Pension Credit are not claiming this crucial benefit, missing out on financial support that could significantly enhance their quality of life, especially as winter approaches. The Cambridgeshire County Council has launched a dedicated webpage to assist residents in determining whether they qualify for Pension Credit and to guide them through the application process.

Pension Credit is designed to provide a financial boost to individuals over the state pension age who are on low incomes. The benefit, on average, offers over £3,900 annually to those eligible, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The exact amount awarded varies depending on an individual’s income and savings, but it can make a substantial difference in covering essential costs such as food, heating, and other bills.

Unlocking Additional Support through Pension Credit

Beyond the direct financial support it provides, claiming Pension Credit can unlock access to a range of additional benefits. Notably, winter fuel payments—which previously were universally available to all pensioners—are now limited to those receiving Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits, following a recent government change in July. Eligible individuals may also access other benefits, including:

  • £200 towards energy costs (or £300 for those over 80).

  • A free TV licence for those over 75.

  • Discounts on council tax and help with NHS costs, such as dental treatment.

  • Transport support for hospital visits and other health-related travel.

These additional benefits can make a meaningful impact on the overall financial well-being of eligible individuals. However, many pensioners may not be aware of their eligibility or how to apply, leading to the concerning figures seen in Cambridgeshire.

Concerns Over Low Uptake and Outreach Initiatives

Local authorities are urging eligible residents to apply for Pension Credit, especially as the winter season brings heightened costs for heating and other essentials. Alex Bulat, the vice-chair of the Communities, Social Mobility, and Inclusion Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, voiced concerns, stating: “The extra money could go a long way towards household bills, especially as winter approaches.”

There is also worry that many older individuals on low incomes may be unaware of their eligibility. This outreach initiative aims to inform residents and assist them in claiming the support they need to manage daily expenses and maintain a comfortable standard of living. Those eligible can confirm their status and apply directly through the DWP’s official channels or the new web page launched by the county council.

Eligibility and How to Claim

To qualify for Pension Credit, individuals must be over the state pension age and meet certain income thresholds. As of now, eligibility requires:

  • A weekly income below £218.15 for single claimants or £332.95 for joint income (for couples).

  • Additional savings or assets may be factored into the assessment.

Eligible residents are encouraged to verify their status and, if qualified, complete the application process. While some benefits, like the free TV licence or NHS support, may require separate applications, many benefits become accessible immediately upon approval for Pension Credit.

The council and DWP hope that increased awareness will drive eligible residents to claim this support, easing financial stress and helping pensioners maintain a secure and healthy lifestyle.
